Electronic Emotions

When people find I love electronic music, often they instantly label it as being cold, mechanical and unemotional. It is beautiful songs like this that show electronic music can evoke all kinds of emotion, with much heart. Make me want to lay back, close my eyes, fly away and dream.

If Heaven Has A Soundtrack

I'm pretty sure the background music in heaven will sound like this.

The Minogue Sisters

Anyone with any interest in electronic music has certainly heard of Kylie Minogue. But have you heard of her younger sister Dannii? Following in her big sister's footsteps, and sounding quite similar, which is not necessarly a bad thing, Dannii puts out a tune that is quite soothing for a Friday evening. Though the video visuals are on the cheesy side (is it me or do all female electronic vocalist videos look the same), the song is great.

And her older sister Kylie, with one of her best tunes. Poor girl has battled breast cancer but is still going strong and looking great for 42. I absolutely love her 2002 hit song "Love At First Sight" which she has said talks about falling in love with electronic music a DJ played and forever being hooked. Not so much different from my story falling in love with electronic music as a kid.

Tron Legacy: Reconfigured

The Oscars are only confirming to me that it is just elitist back-patting with Daft Punk being ignored for even a nomination in the best movie scores of 2010. Tron Legacy was an excellent movie, but the soundtrack was simply superb, with nothing but critical acclaim. These two extremely talented robots mix drum machines & electrons with strings & trumpets to create the acoustic Tron universe that stirs as much emotion as it does disc battling conflict.

"Tron Legacy: Reconfigured ", a remix album, has been created for Daft Punk's Tron Legacy soundtrack by some electronic music heavy hitters such as The Crystal Method, Photek, Moby, Paul Oakenfold and Pretty Lights. Lets keep hoping the rumors are true and another Tron movie is green-lit with Daft Punk back at the musical helm, so yet another remix album will come about.

Deadmau5 - Playing To A Packed Crowd

How cool would it be to play in front of a huge packed crowded? Deadmau5 gives us an idea of how it feels.

Why Guitars?

"Call My Name" by Sultan and Ned Shepard. Great song, but I find it hilarious that they feel the need to have a guitar player on stage when one can clearly not hear a guitar in the song. The same goes for many electronic bands that play on stage by having a drummer when nearly all of the actual drums come from a drum machine. I sort of understand the logic as there is a lack of physical presence due to nearly all the music being made inside a computer. Yet some can accomplish a great physical presence without faking the actual creation of the music such as with Daft Punk or The Crystal Method.

Stanton Warriors - Get Wild

Breakbeat is one of my personal favorite sub-generes of Electronic music, and Stanton Warriors knocks out a winner with this one.  The driving yet poignant synth that kicks in at 2:20 is very reminiscent of the computer MOD scene from the 1990's.  For those not familiar with the MOD scene, I'm sorry, and will have to do another post about it in the future.  Until then, get wild.

From the following mix album, even though the mix on the album is different than the single above.

Love Has Gone - Fonzerelli Remix

Maybe not the most appropriate song with Valentine's Day next week, but here is a great remix by Fonzerelli with a super slick playful bassline.

Stardust: The Music Sounds Better With You

I. FREAKING. LOVE. THIS. SONG. Released in 1998, this was the only song the band ever made, and consistently ranks as one of the best, if not the best, dance anthem of the 1990's. One Daft Punk member plus two of his friends, and you get this legendary track. The music video, I don't like as much, even though it is directed by the extremely talented Michel Gondry (numerous music videos, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Green Hornet). The track still gets people dancing 13 years later.
